BBC – The Secret Life of Chaos (2010) (Part 1/6)

Playlist: www.youtube.com “Chaos theory has a bad name, conjuring up images of unpredictable weather, economic crashes and science gone wrong. But there is a fascinating and hidden side to Chaos, one that scientists are only now beginning to understand. It turns out that chaos theory answers a question that mankind has asked for millennia – how did we get here? In this documentary, Professor Jim Al-Khalili sets out to uncover one of the great mysteries of science – how does a universe that starts off as dust end up with intelligent life? How does order emerge from disorder? It’s a mindbending, counterintuitive and for many people a deeply troubling idea. But Professor Al-Khalili reveals the science behind much of beauty and structure in the natural world and discovers that far from it being magic or an act of God, it is in fact an intrinsic part of the laws of physics. Amazingly, it turns out that the mathematics of chaos can explain how and why the universe creates exquisite order and pattern. The natural world is full of awe-inspiring examples of the way nature transforms simplicity into complexity. From trees to clouds to humans – after watching this film you’ll never be able to look at the world in the same way again.” Check out my blog for more videos atheistplanet.blogspot.com

This is one of the best science documentaries I’ve seen in a long time.

  2. turxxx says:

Yet more proof that BBC documentaries are by far the best.

Thank you for sharing. This would have been something that I would have liked to upload.

    What’s going on?

  4. torkrist says:

I clearly missed out on this great unified theory. Maybe you could point it out for us who are missing something?

  5. COSMICSMI2LE says:

    HAIL ERIS!

  6. EdgeUHF says:

YOU FAIL there is CHAOS your perception is limited. Although there are things like the golden ratio, fibonnaci numbers and everything MATHEMATICAL and FACTUAL, 2 natural things tha happen are NEVER the same. This is why cloning and in-breeding fails. The new world order will also FAIL you will see that the law of the jungle and chaos will return. . even after all of human kind is wiped out someday.

  7. Piscivorus says:

There is no such thing as actual chaos. If there was, it would represent a complete breakdown in the order of nature. Like a pinhole in a balloon, it would expand at the speed of light and unravel the entire universe. Chaos is not a property of nature, it’s a consequence of our own limited perception. For every effect there is a cause, and for every cause there is an effect. Anything else and you can be sure you’re missing something.

I think, and this is only my thought, that man needs to wake up. wake up world, it is time to get in tune, turned on, stop worrying and start wondering. pholks I speak to you with only a inkling of hope that you will take as serious. this seriousness is yourself people, and to get back to you, you need to become ambidextrous, I am not going to put a gun to your head but I believe that the mind works in only three ways. left, right, or completion(ambidexterity), copy a dictionary also, life is 1X

When you travel trough infinity, sooner or later you’re going meet something like a human being.

someone must tell to the presenter that philosophy is the father of all sciences !!!!

  12. infinit888 says:

    I’m quite calm.

I just don’t understand why you dismissed it out of hand instead of asking for a more detailed explanation?

  13. AlphaKidd1 says:

whoaa. . . . relax. well thanks for explaining. See, I didn’t know that.

    So go sheesh someone else.

  14. FreestyleBoy2010 says:

basically we live in the matrix

  15. AliK2417 says:

    thats why its an ‘analogy’,
    not an example.
its only meant to help u understand it better

  16. Mistahshadow says:

I saw mandelbrot fractals in an intense shroom trip once. what does that mean? lol

  17. infinit888 says:

He was talking about our atomic composition not how the atoms are arranged.

These things are not ‘in us’ in their elemental form but bond with each other to make complex molecules.

When broken down DNA is nothing more than O, N, H, C, P which can be poetically expressed to be water (H2O), coal (Cn), Air (primarily N2) and phosphorus (Pn).

    Sheesh

I loved this show when it was on and shall spread the good word far and wide. I love Maths, and this is some of the most important and relevant.

I am, however, surprised by how many people here still misunderstand something basic – chaos/chaotic systems do NOT just self-organise by ‘chance’. There are systems of feedback that GENERATE order from the chaos. It doesn’t just ‘happen’, just as planetary systems don’t just ‘happen’ – forces/systems create the order with feedback. . .

  21. DeviantincTV says:

    @Antilli. . .

well, sand does change into rock – sandstone, crystals, metamorphic stone.

Our cells turn into skin, bones, organs etc. , however they remain cells.

The point is that, mathematically speaking, the drivers of these types of self-organised patterns are essentially the same. Not that the way sands form dunes is a good analogy for cell differentiation. . .

  22. aslalsjkfdlje says:

MuslimGhost – islam teaches and requires the murder of anyone who leaves the belief system. Countless people have been murdered as a result. The man who created this rule also had sex with a child (documented by multiple muslim authors). Allah was originally a pagan moon god. His idol was one of 360 idols in the kaaba prior to islam (a fact recorded by muslims in the hadith). And you put all your faith in this cult? How sad for you.

  23. aslalsjkfdlje says:

WillKBaker – This documentary is obviously not an argument against reductionism. It presents a clear and simple explanation of how the entire complexity of the universe, including you, arises from pure simplicity. It is one of the most powerful reductionist arguments ever made. Please think before commenting!!

  24. seonf says:

@MuslimGhost Lol go back to believing your fairy tales and imaginary friends.

  25. ind0ctr1n3 says:

Lmfao, says the guy believing in imaginary entities. -Points and laughs. -

Crawl back in the hole you came from, religious twat.
